Chapter 13 Summary
During the exploration of America, the Chinese, Indians, and Muslims were not as motivated as the Europeans, due to the fact that these regions already had rich markets. Because of this, the Europeans were on a quest to colonize different regions of the world. They were able to do something that wasn’t very common at the time, which was to conquer territories that were further away from them. Soon after, the Europeans began to desire more power and to further colonize different parts of the world.
Like most things, the European conquest came with severe consequences, including the downfall of Native American societies. This happened because the Natives were not prone to the diseases the Europeans and Africans carried, resulting in a sickness that almost wiped out their entire population. This period of time was called, “The Great Dying”. After the decrease of Natives, many immigrants, including African slaves and colonizing Europeans, migrated to America. This created a change in America because foreign plants and animals were also brought to America, which was never done before.
During this time, America was recognized by its different colonies, such as the Aztecs and Incas, the sugar colonies located in South America, and the settler colonies in the New England area. These colonies were differentiated by their colonizers and their own separate distinctions.
Not only did the Europeans try to create an empire by colonizing different parts of the world, but there were also many different empires at the time. This included the Russian empire, who took over Siberia and the Steppes and Russified the people in those regions, by expanding eastward and westward. There was also the Chinese empire, expanding into Central Asia and essentially taking over Mongolia, Xinjang, and Tibet. This chapter further elaborates on the Muslims and Hindis in the Mughal Empire, and the Muslims and Christians in the Ottoman Empire.
As a result of the new and different developments worldwide, this time period from 1450-1750 allowed a new world to transform and begin.
